Solutions for Vehicle Routing and Dispatch

Challenge

The growth of your business puts pressure on its' quality. To remain on top of your processes constant monitoring of an ever increasing number of transport activities is a must. More equipment, more personell, more movements make your operations more complex. On the other hand: economy of scale opens new perspectives. The effect of cost reductions by limiting the distance driven, number of used equipment and other factors gives you opportunities for large savings. New technology allows to interact with drivers and equipment on the spot - a huge potential to implement the real-time support that your business needs. How to keep control over such a labyrinth of developments, threats and opportunities ?

Solution

ORTEC's Vehicle Routing and Dispatch solution offers the benefit of immediate, effective and efficient control of both your longterm and daily planning activities. Improved control, together with plannning improvements via our Advanced Planning System (which is a standard part of ORTECs  Vehicle Routing and Dispatch) can lead to cost reductions of 5 up to 15%, depending on the type of  transport  industry. There are many roads that we follow to reach these business goals.

ORTEC Vehicle Routing and Dispatch is about:

  • cost reduction though less driving  times and distance
  • cost reduction though less hours spent  on  planning  activities
  • improved customer service through increased insight in waiting hours, slack times
  • improved customer service  through proactive exception management, notification of shipment status  and increased performance being on time
  • improved process efficiency through a larger span of control for planner and dispatcher, (universal acces to  all  data by any person  if required)
  • improved process efficiency through real-time interaction with systems (REP, TMS) and devices (board computer, handheld PC)
  • improved process effectiveness through limitiation of manual data entry activities to the absolute minimum.

Solution Highlight

ORTECs Decision Support systems: based on common ground

Planning requires taking complex decisions based on large amounts of information. Decision Support Systems aim at easing this activity. COMTEC , ORTECs technical platform  common to all its' solutions is a scalable software architecture and application framework for realtime Decision Support Systems. The COMTEC architecture allows  multiple planners to work together by presenting the relevant information real-time on their desktop. It provides a modern and flexible user interface with a visual  geographic mapping tool, Gantt chart and fully searchable and customizable screens. ORTEC's COMTEC-based Decision Support Systems are able to integrate with the data flow of any  existing IT infrastructure.

The COMTEC Framework includes the following important characteristics:
  • state-of-the-art service oriented architecture (SOA)
  • straightforward integration with existing IT infrastructure
  • real - time information processing
  • advanced routing, scheduling and optimization services
  • scalableplanning and IT infrastructure
  • a central data repository
  • a fully customizable user interface
Shared functional features:
As part of the shared COMTEC framework ORTEC solutions offers many functions

  • The system calculates Estimated Time of Arrival and stop sequences based on geocoded addresses, contraints, and cost parameters. Based on 'on board' information or GPS positions cancellations, postponements, and actuals are immediately followed by re-calculated ETA and also re-sequenced routes
  • our business intelligence module for business analysis enables extensive reporting and querying possibilities on operational and all historical data.
  • Key functionality of the solution is th capability to track of resources in any kind of combination. The systems can work with predefined resource combinations, but is designed to deal with any combination required at any time. Locations of spotted or dropped chassis and trailers are known at all time.
  • Driver legislation is mandatory in any kind of Routing solution. The solution calculates remaining working and driving times per driver and processing updates on GPS postiotions and 'on board information'.
  • As this solution is used in all types of routing industies the solution provides the user a own defined concept of a 'route'. Whether a route is defined as a drivers day duty, a round from depot to depot, or as a long haul for a couple a days, it is up to de planners or company perception.
